The Baroque D clarinet was played in a variety of music: Telemann’s cantatas and instrumental works (1719–1728), Handel’s Ouverture for 2 clarinets and horn, HWV 424 (c1740–1741), Rameau’s opera Acante et Céphise (1751), and Molter’s six Concertos (1740s).

Johann Sebastian Bach introduced this model to London in 1751. It has a much brighter sound, which made it refer to as a “Mock trumpet” and was used like a trumpet in pieces. Composers only wrote for it from middle C upwards.
